10th Pass and 8th Pass Government Jobs in Assam: Grade IV Posts and Beyond
The government jobs open to HSLC and Class 8 pass candidates in Assam, from Grade IV posts and drivers to police, India Post and railways, with how selection works and how to prepare.
"Without a degree, forget about a government job." People in Assam hear this all the time, and it isn't true.
A huge part of the state's government workforce does work that needs a Class 8 or HSLC certificate and a steady record: office attendants, peons, chowkidars, cooks, drivers, helpers in hospitals and hostels, field staff. In Assam most of these fall under Grade IV, and they're some of the most fiercely contested recruitments in the state, because so many people qualify.
So let's look at what you can apply for after Class 8 or 10, what the notices ask for besides the certificate, and how to stand out when thousands of others are going for the same posts. As always, check dates and vacancy numbers in the notification itself.
What counts as 10th pass and 8th pass
In Assam notifications you'll see HSLC, Class X, Matriculation or 10th pass. They all refer to the same level, from SEBA or another recognised board. For the 8th pass level you may see Class VIII, or "passed the eighth standard from a recognised school".
Two details decide whether you can apply:
- Whether the post asks for a minimum or a maximum. Most posts set a minimum qualification. A few Grade IV posts have, in some recruitments, also set an upper limit on qualification, so that the posts go to the people they were designed for. Read the qualification line in full.
- Whether something is required alongside the certificate. A driving licence, a trade certificate, physical standards or the ability to read and write a local language are common.
Government jobs you can apply for after 10th or 8th
Grade IV posts in departments and offices
Grade IV covers the support staff that keep every government office, school, hospital and court running. Typical posts include:
- Peon, office attendant or messenger
- Chowkidar and night watchman
- Sweeper and cleaner
- Mali (gardener)
- Cook and kitchen helper in hostels and hospitals
- Ward attendant and hospital helper
- Bearer, lift operator and similar posts
In Assam, many Grade IV posts across departments have been filled through a common recruitment examination, while some offices still recruit on their own. Read each notification to see which route it uses.
Drivers
Government drivers are needed in almost every department and district office. These posts usually ask for a minimum school qualification together with a valid driving licence for the right class of vehicle and a period of driving experience. Some recruitments include a driving test. If you hold a licence and drive regularly, this is one of the most practical government jobs open to you.
Police and uniformed services
Some constable posts in Assam are open to HSLC pass candidates, alongside physical standards for height, chest and running. Fire and emergency services, home guards and forest protection also take HSLC pass candidates in some of their recruitments. Central forces and the armed forces also have entries open to 10th pass candidates.
Central government posts
National recruitments with posts for 10th pass candidates include constable (general duty) posts in the central armed police forces through the Staff Selection Commission, multi-tasking staff posts in central offices, and Gramin Dak Sevak posts in India Post, which are filled on the basis of Class 10 marks in many cycles. Candidates from Assam can apply, and many of these posts are located in the state.
Railways
The railways recruit for entry-level posts in track maintenance, workshops and other departments. These posts usually need Class 10 and, for some, an ITI certificate. They're filled through notices from the Railway Recruitment Boards, and candidates in Assam normally apply through RRB Guwahati.
Apprenticeships and trade posts
An ITI certificate after Class 10 opens a much wider set of jobs: trade apprenticeships with public sector companies, technical helper posts and many railway posts. If you've passed Class 10 and are unsure what to do next, a one or two-year ITI course in a trade that interests you is one of the most reliable ways to improve your chances.
What the notifications ask for besides the certificate
The certificate gets you through the door. These other conditions decide who is selected:
- Age. A minimum age, usually 18, and an upper limit with relaxation for reserved categories and ex-servicemen. Age is counted on a date given in the notice.
- Residence. State government posts in Assam are often restricted to the state's permanent residents.
- Employment Exchange registration. Asked for in many Grade III and Grade IV recruitments in Assam. Register at your local exchange if you haven't, and renew it when it's due.
- Language. The ability to read and write Assamese, or the official language of the area, is common for posts dealing with the public.
- Physical fitness. For police, uniformed and some field posts.
- Licence or trade certificate. For drivers, technical helpers and apprentices.
How Grade IV selection usually works
Selection varies from one recruitment to the next, but most combine some of these:
- A written test in general knowledge, simple arithmetic, reasoning and a language, set at the level of the qualification.
- A physical or skill test for posts that need it, such as a driving test or physical standards.
- Marks in your qualifying examination, used in some recruitments to shortlist or rank candidates.
- Document verification, where your certificates are checked against your application.
Because the written test is pitched at Class 8 to 10 level, the difference between selected and not selected is often a handful of marks. Steady preparation matters more than people expect.
How to prepare for a Grade IV exam
- Get the syllabus from the notification. It's usually short. Make a one-page list of the topics.
- Practise arithmetic every day. Percentages, simple interest, time and work, and basic geometry come up again and again.
- Build general knowledge about Assam. Districts and their headquarters, rivers, festivals, freedom fighters, important places and current affairs of the state.
- Read a newspaper daily, in Assamese or English. It helps with current affairs and with the language section.
- Solve previous question papers under a time limit. They show you the level and the kind of questions.
- Keep your documents ready so you can apply the moment a notification appears.
Filling in the online form is where many first-time applicants slip up. Before your first application, read our walkthrough on applying for Assam government jobs online.
Private jobs worth considering after 10th
While you wait for government recruitments, private work builds experience that counts later. Retail and shops, delivery, security, hotels and restaurants, warehouses, tea factories and local businesses regularly take candidates with Class 10. In Guwahati especially, these jobs are often filled within days of being advertised.

Watch out: Grade IV posts attract the most scams
Because so many people apply for Grade IV posts, they're the favourite bait for fraudsters. The patterns repeat:
- Someone offers to "get you selected" for a fee, because they "know someone in the department".
- A fake appointment letter arrives by WhatsApp, followed by a request for money for "verification", "training" or "uniform".
- A notice circulates with no official source, advertising thousands of posts with no exam.
A government post can't be bought. Real recruitment is announced on the recruiting body's official website, and any fee is printed in the notice and paid only through the official portal. If you've already handed over money or documents, our guide to fake job offers explains the next steps.
If you are thinking about studying further
Grade IV posts are a solid start, but they aren't the ceiling. If you can, keep studying:
- Passing HS opens clerical posts, railway and SSC posts and more. See what becomes possible in our 12th pass guide.
- An ITI certificate opens technical and apprentice posts with better pay.
- Distance education lets you study while you work.
Many people in Assam start in a Grade IV post, study alongside it and move up through departmental exams and promotions over the years.
What to do next
With Class 8 or HSLC you can compete for Grade IV posts in offices, schools and hospitals, driver posts, police and uniformed services, central posts like Gramin Dak Sevak and multi-tasking staff, and railway and apprentice posts once you add an ITI. Competition is heavy, so steady preparation, ready documents and careful forms make the difference.
And one rule with no exceptions: never pay anyone who offers to arrange a post.
When you're ready, look through the government jobs open in Assam right now and set up a job alert so the next Grade IV notice reaches you with time to spare.
